How do I photograph a critter?
Open the app and tap the camera button on the main screen. Point your camera at a bird, insect, plant, or other wildlife and tap the shutter. CritterSnap will automatically extract the subject and create a digital sticker of your sighting.
How does species identification work?
After you take a photo, CritterSnap sends it to the iNaturalist API, which uses computer vision to suggest the most likely species. The app displays the top matches along with conservation status and Wikipedia information. An internet connection is required for identification.
Why does CritterSnap need my location?
Location data is used to tag each wildlife sighting with GPS coordinates so you can view your sightings on the map and see where you've been exploring. Location is never shared with third parties. You can deny location permission and still use the camera and sticker features.
Can I use CritterSnap without an internet connection?
The camera, sticker creation, and your existing collection all work offline. Species identification, conservation data, and Wikipedia species summaries require an internet connection since they rely on external APIs.
How do I share a critter sticker?
Open any critter from your gallery and tap the share button. You can save the sticker as an image to your Photos library or share it directly to other apps.
What are Achievements?
CritterSnap awards achievements as you build your collection — for example, photographing your first bird, logging sightings across multiple locations, or discovering rare species. Achievements appear as toasts in the app and are tracked in your profile.
How do I delete a sighting from my collection?
Open the critter's detail view from the gallery, then swipe left on it in the list or use the delete option in the detail screen. Deleting a critter permanently removes its sticker and location data from your device.
My species identification looks wrong — what can I do?
iNaturalist’s AI works best with clear, well-lit photos where the subject fills most of the frame. Try retaking the photo in better lighting. You can also browse the alternative species suggestions shown below the top match.
What iOS version is required?
CritterSnap is available on iOS. Check the App Store listing for the minimum supported iOS version.
